U2 Canal house Project

2006

This workshop was an investigation of the consequences of taking the interpretation of the existing situation for the design. So what happens when the client withholds the briefing and the architect has no preset ideas to project? The variety of ways to draw the current situation already shows how the chosen perspective determines the different qualities of the building. When we imagine this interpretation of the building as a concept design, the role of the designer consequently changes. Seeing the building as a towering construction turns you into an 'associative engineer', while perceiving the building as a beautiful old woman turns your profession towards a 'spatial doctor'. These new approaches to the discipline determined the collaboration with other creative and executive people and the relationship with the commissioner. Presentation forms shows the different stages of outcome. Perhaps it might bring us closer to an alternative in a world where design is becoming too much and places-left-over-after-planning are celebrated.
